first_imgWhat’s your favourite childhood holiday memory?I spent all my summers in Canada. My father is Canadian and we’d spend the summer months at a lake in Ontario. Happy days.You named your daughter Iona after the Scottish island: what is it about islands that so appeals to you?I love the Hebrides. I have visited many times. We plan to take her to visit her namesake next year. The Hebrides might not have the weather but they make up for it in their sheer beauty.What work of travel literature has inspired you most?Garcia Marquez, Bruce Chatwin and Leigh Fermor were all huge inspirations.What has been your favourite animal you have met in your work or on your travels?I do have a soft spot for camels. I used them to cross the empty quarter of Oman. Stubborn creatures but very comical. I’d like to see them in Mongolia.Who would be your ideal fictional travel companion?Alice in wonderland. Just for her travelling red shoes.What advice do you have for anyone wanting to be an adventurer like yourself?Follow your dreams. Think big and don’t let anyone tell you you can’t. A big walk with the dogs and the children.You’ve rowed the Atlantic, ran across the Sahara, and so much more, but what’s your dream adventure you haven’t yet taken?I still have a dream to one day swim across the Atlantic. New York to Cornwall. Watch this space.What’s your favourite place to go on holiday where there’s no adventure involved at all?We love travelling Europe. We spend a lot of time in Portugal. I got married there and the children love it. Both the Algarve and the Atlantic coast off Lisbon.What’s the most disappointing place you’ve ever visited?I am an optimist and always like to see the best in everywhere. I suppose I was a little disappointed with Libya (before the war) – there was so much litter.What’s your most embarrassing travel story?I once arrived at the wrong airport for a flight. Gatwick instead of Heathrow. Oops!
