Each sports year schools are more and more dependent on volunteers to fill their coaching positions. There are several reasons for this. First of all, what used to be a normal way for a teacher to pick up extra money was to coach something. Today most teachers don’t have time to do this. Their teaching load does not allow it.Another reason is the number of sports and extra curricular activities that schools provide. In the old days, schools offered 5 or 6 sports during a year and now they may have 18 or more sports (this is counting both boys and girls). Also, the sports must pay their own way and they do not offer stipends for the number of assistant coaches that are needed. This means volunteers who do not expect pay must fill the positions.Stay tuned for more on this tomorrow.
