Quarterback Mark Mendrun fought off effects of the flu and came off the bench in the second half to lead Damien to victory over Diamond Bar. Mendrun was sick all week and didn’t start Friday’s game. Without him, Damien held a 3-0 lead at halftime. Spartans coach Scott Morrison handed the ball to Mendrun to start the second half and the ailing QB responded. Completing 8 of 9 passes for 127 yards, Mendrun led Damien on three drives of 70 yards or more in the second half – one for a touchdown on a 1-yard run. Damien responded on defense as well, limiting Diamond Bar to 94 yards total offense. Alex Thompson and Trevor Stokes came up with interceptions for the Spartans. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. It wasn’t a very happy halftime for us,” Morrison said.
