Bob Weir Names Songs That Dead & Company Plan To Debut This Summer

first_imgWith Dead & Company tour just a few short weeks away, the band’s two iconic guitarists – Bob Weir and John Mayer – spoke to Rolling Stone at length about their upcoming plans. The two touched on everything from Mayer’s newfound passion for the Grateful Dead to specific plans for the band’s future, including a number of songs they’d like to play out on stage.According to the interview , Dead & Company are planning to add 20 more original Grateful Dead songs to the summer rotation, including “Passenger” and “Weather Report Suite.” He also spoke about some more tunes in the article, saying, “We need to finish up where ‘St. Stephen’ goes – there are other sections we didn’t have time to get to…”He continues, “And I’d like to work up ‘Box of Rain,’… The vocal register is right in John’s wheelhouse. I think I’ve talked him into it.” Weir also mentions “Days Between” in the article, but the interview must have been conducted before the band’s free performance last Monday, May 23rd at The Fillmore in San Francisco, CA. The group debuted that song, as well as “Big Railroad Blues” and “Queen Jane Approximately” for the performance. Watch it all here.John Mayer also recently spoke about some new songs on the docket, including “Dire Wolf,” “Throwing Stones,” “High Time” and “Foolish Heart.” Read more about that here. What else does the future hold for Dead & Company? A possible studio session, according to Weir. After another tour or two, the band is considering a visit to the studio to record something that combines new material with songs “never fully addressed” by the Dead in the studio, like “The Other One” or “Dark Star.” Says Weir, “That would be something of an adventure.”The interview also sees Weir juxtaposing Mayer with Trey Anastasio, who was on hand to celebrate the Dead’s 50th anniversary at the five Fare Thee Well performances. “John is a classicist by nature. Trey is more of an iconoclast… Juxtaposing Trey’s take on the material with the insights John brings got me looking at all of the songs afresh.”It’s nice to hear Bob Weir so excited about the Grateful Dead’s music, and about Dead & Company. Considering he recently spoke about his intentions to tour for the rest of his life, we can’t wait to see what the future will bring for Dead & Co! The tour starts June 10th, and full dates can be read here.[H/t Rolling Stone]last_img read more
